Topic: Using prepositions to describe location

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use prepositions to describe location in a sentence.

Materials

  • Pictures of different locations (e.g. home, school, park, etc.)
  • Preposition cards (e.g. "in, on, under, above, beside, behind, in front of, between, beside, between, behind" etc.)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to name different places or locations they know.
  • Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students to locate the different places on the board using prepositions.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of prepositions. Explain that they are words that show the location or direction of something.
  • Read some sentences with prepositions to the class and have them identify the prepositions.
  • Encourage the class to try to add in their own prepositions to sentences as you read them.

Guided Practice

  • Using the sentence strips, have the students work in pairs to create their own sentences with prepositions.
  • Have the students share their sentences with the class and discuss the prepositions they used.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students create a class book with prepositions. Each student can choose a noun and create a page with a picture and a sentence using their chosen preposition. The students can then collaboratively create a class book with all of their pages.

Closure

  • Review the different prepositions and have the students give examples of each.
