Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define responsible decision-making and provide examples of behaviors that demonstrate responsible decision-making.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with definition of responsible decision-making and examples of behaviors that demonstrate responsible decision-making

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever made a difficult or challenging decision.
  • Ask them to share their experiences and examples of decisions they had to make.
  • Ask them to share what factors they considered when making these decisions.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of responsible decision-making and explain that it is the process of considering all the possible options and outcomes before making a decision.
  • Discuss the importance of making informed decisions, considering the consequences of our actions, and being mindful of the impact our decisions have on others.
  • Use textbook and handouts as a source of information and examples of responsible decision-making.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a scenario to consider. For example, "You are faced with a difficult choice between going to college and starting a career, or staying in your hometown to take care of your family. What are the possible outcomes of each option and how will each option impact the people around you?"
  • Have the groups discuss the scenario and possible outcomes and then present their thoughts to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based assignment where they have to make a real decision and consider the possible outcomes. For example, they could create a plan for their future education and career, and then consider the possible outcomes and alternative courses of action.

Closure

  • Have students share their projects with the class and discuss the process of making a decision and considering the possible outcomes. This can also be a good opportunity to review the key concepts covered in the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice to ensure they are accurately identifying the key concepts and principles of responsible decision-making.
  • Collect and review the written projects completed during independent practice to assess understanding of the concepts covered in the lesson.
