Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a time when they felt like they really knew a character in a book.
  • Have them share their experiences with the class and discuss what factors helped them to develop a sense of the character.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of characterization and explain that it is the process by which a writer gives a character certain traits, behaviors, and characteristics that help the reader to understand who the character is.
  • Review the different types of characterization, including:
  • Direct characterization, which is when the writer directly tells the reader about the character's traits, behaviors, and characteristics.
  • Indirect characterization, which is when the writer shows the reader the character's traits, behaviors, and characteristics through actions and events in the story.
  • Sympathetic characterization, which is when the writer develops a character in a way that makes the reader feel empathy for them.
  • Antsympathetic characterization, which is when the writer develops a character in a way that makes the reader feel antipathy for them.
  • Use a story or some passages from a story to demonstrate the different types of characterization and have students identify the characteristics of the characters in the story.

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a passage from a story or a character description.
  • Have the groups work together to create a chart that shows the different types of characterization used in the passage or character description.
