Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to define environmental issues and identify at least three examples of such issues.
• Students will be able to explain the causes and consequences of each issue and propose solutions for each.

Materials

• Handouts with information about environmental issues
• Writing prompts related to environmental issues
• Colored pencils or pens

Warm-up

• Show the students a picture or video about an environmental issue and ask them to describe what they see.
• Ask them to brainstorm a list of words that come to mind when they think about environmental issues.
• Write their words on the board and discuss possible meanings.

Direct Instruction

• Review the definition of "environmental issue." An environmental issue is a problem that affects the environment, such as pollution, climate change, or deforestation.
• Discuss the causes and consequences of different environmental issues. For example, deforestation can cause soil erosion and flooding, while climate change can lead to extreme weather events such as droughts and floods.
• Introduce the writing prompt and explain that the purpose of the writing exercise is to brainstorm ideas and organize them into a coherent essay.

Guided Practice

• Have students begin writing their essays by brainstorming ideas on a separate piece of paper. Encourage them to think creatively and include as many ideas as they can think of.
• After brainstorming, have students organize their ideas into a coherent essay by writing a title and a brief summary paragraph for each idea.
• As students work, circulate the room and provide feedback and assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students complete their essays, revising and editing as needed.
• Encourage students to share their essays with their classmates and seek feedback on their writing.

Closure

• Have students share their essays with the class and discuss the issues and solutions discussed in their essays.

Assessment

• Collect and grade the essays based on the students' ability to effectively discuss and analyze an environmental issue and its related solutions.
