Topic: The Environment

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to express their opinions on the topic during the speaking task in the exam.
• Students will be able to listen and understand native English speakers during the listening task in the exam.

Materials

• Old test papers
• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with key words and their meanings

Warm-Up

• Introduce the topic of the exam, The Environment. Ask students what they know about the environment and write their ideas on the whiteboard.
• Ask students to pair up and discuss their opinions on the topic for 5 minutes.
• After 5 minutes, bring the class together and ask students to share their opinions on the topic.

Direct Instruction

• Review key vocabulary related to the environment, such as "pollution," "conservation," and "global warming."
• Explain the structure of the IELTS speaking test, including the types of questions that will be asked and the time limit.
• Demonstrate how to use the speaking rubric to evaluate an answer on a sample speaking question.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Give each group a set of old IELTS test papers.
• Have the groups work together to identify the key words in each question and to come up with a well-organized answer using the key vocabulary.
• Have each group present their answers to the class, and have the class evaluate the quality of their answers using the speaking rubric.
• As a class, discuss any common mistakes or areas for improvement that the students discovered during the Guided Practice.

Independent Practice

• Have students work independently to complete an IELTS practice test.
• Encourage students to use the key vocabulary and grammar structures that they have learned during the class to construct well-organized answers.
• Have students complete the test in a specific time limit, then have them submit their answers to be marked by the teacher.

Closure

• Review the key takeaways from the class, including the importance of speaking and listening skills for the IELTS exam, as well as the key vocabulary and grammar structures that students learned during the class.
• Have students share their thoughts and reflections on their IELTS practice test.

Assessment

• Formative assessment: Group work on the topic The Environment; Participation in class discussions; completion of the IELTS practice test.
