Introduction

  • Welcome to this high voltage switchgear training session. In this lesson, we will be learning about the basic principles and components of high voltage switchgear as well as maintenance and operation guidelines for such equipment. As we go through the session, please make sure to ask any questions you might have.

Key terms and concepts

  • HV switchgear: a type of equipment used to transfer, distribute and switch high voltage electricity in a power plant or substation
  • PSE: Public Safety and Emergency
  • HVAC: High Voltage Alternating Current
  • HVDC: High Voltage Direct Current

Basic Principles and Components of High Voltage Switchgear

  • High voltage switchgear usually consists of high voltage circuit breakers and auxiliary equipment such as control panels, pads, disconnectors and switchgears. Their core function is to enable and disable the flow of high voltage electricity.
  • In a power plant or substation, high voltage switchgear is used to transfer, distribute and switch the high voltage electricity from the generation or transmission side to the distribution or load side. This is done through the use of high voltage circuit breakers which are basically electrically operated switches. They are designed to interrupt or open the high voltage circuit when triggered.
  • The high voltage circuit breakers can be of two types-trip or non-trip. Trip breakers are designed to trip when there is a fault in the high voltage circuit and hence are more commonly used in high voltage switchgear. However, non-trip breakers are more economical and are sometimes used in simple or lightly loaded high voltage circuits.
  • The distribution of electricity through high voltage switchgear is controlled by the control panels and panels. The control panel is used to monitor and control all the circuit breakers in the switchgear while the panels are used to distribute the electricity to different parts of the power plant or substation.
  • High voltage circuit breakers are usually of two types-Isolating or Non-Isolating. Isolating breakers are used to completely disconnect the circuit, while non-isolating breakers can be used to transfer the load from one circuit to another.

Maintenance and Operation Guidelines for High Voltage Switchgear

  • As high voltage switchgear is a critical piece of equipment in a power plant or substation, it is important to regularly inspect, test and maintain it. This helps in ensuring its reliability and safety, as well as enabling it to efficiently carry out its function.
  • Regular inspection and testing of high voltage circuit breakers should be done to check for any faults, damage or defects
  • The maintenance and operation guidelines for high voltage switchgear include the following:
  • Checking the high voltage circuit breakers for any damage or defects such as cracks, loose or missing parts, and bent or deformed breakers.
  • Checking the operation of control panels, panels and auxiliary equipment for any faults or defects such as loose or damaged wiring and connections, and malfunctioning of switches, relays and indicators.
  • Checking the high voltage circuit breakers for proper operation by tripping and re-closing them. This should be done both manually and automatically.
  • Checking the operation of control panels and panels by switching on the high voltage circuit breakers and monitoring the operation of auxiliary equipment such as relays, switches and indicators.
  • Performing daily inspections of high voltage switchgear, recording any observations and reporting any defects or faults to the supervisor.

Safety Procedures and Precautions Related to High Voltage Switchgear Operation and Maintenance

  • As we have seen, high voltage switchgear is a critical piece of equipment in a power plant or substation and its proper operation and maintenance is important for safety and reliability. However, there are certain safety procedures and precautions that should be followed during operation and maintenance to ensure the safety of the personnel involved.
  • The safety procedures and precautions related to high voltage switchgear operation and maintenance include the following:
  • Wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as high voltage gloves, high voltage footwear, and high voltage apron while working on or around the high voltage switchgear.
  • Following the maintenance and operation guidelines and procedures as recommended by the manufacturer or as specified in the operation and maintenance manual.
  • Following the safety procedures and precautions specified in the operation and maintenance manual.
  • Reporting any defects or faults in high voltage switchgear or its related equipment to the supervisor.

Conclusion

  • In this lesson, we have learned about the basic principles, components and operation guidelines for high voltage switchgear. We also saw some safety procedures and precautions related to operation and maintenance. As you have seen, it is important to properly inspect, maintain and operate high voltage switchgear to ensure its reliability and safety.
  • Thank you for watching this high voltage switchgear training session. I look forward to seeing you in the next lesson.
