Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this activity, students will be able to identify family members and describe their relationships using she , he and the verb to be .

Materials

  • Pictures of different family members (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share what their family is like and who their family members are. Write their responses on the chart paper.
  • Ask students if they can name any relatives besides the ones they already mentioned. Write their responses on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of family members using the pictures.
  • Ask students to name the different family members and point to each picture as they say it.
  • Have students repeat the names of the different family members after you.
  • Ask students to say the verb to be (is, are, was, were) after each family member name.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs and take turns saying the names of the different family members and the verb to be after each name.
  • Encourage students to use the correct pronunciation and grammar.

Independent Practice

  • Have students draw a picture of their family and write the names of the family members under their pictures.
  • Have students write sentences about their family using the correct grammar and pronunciation.

Closure

  • Review the concepts of family members and using she ,he and the verb to be.
  • Encourage students to share something about their family that they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of she ,he and the verb to be in sentences.
