Road Safety Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Students

Topic: Road safety

Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to identify hazards on the road and demonstrate appropriate behaviour when encountering them.

Materials

• Pictures of road hazards (e.g. cars, trucks, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, etc.)
• A large cardboard cutout of a road scene

Warm-up

• Ask students to name some hazards they have encountered on the road.
• Discuss the importance of being safe when travelling on the road.

Direct Instruction

• Show pictures or videos of different road hazards, such as animals, pedestrians, and vehicles.
• Discuss the correct way to react when encountering each hazard. For example, when seeing an animal on the road, we should slow down and be alert. When encountering another vehicle, we should keep a safe distance and use our signals.
• Ask students to repeat the correct actions after each hazard.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet or activity on road safety.
• Ask a few pairs to share their answers with the class and discuss any differences.

Independent Practice

• Have students create their own road safety poster or presentation to share with the class.
• Encourage students to be creative and use their own ideas and experiences to inform their posters or presentations.

Closure

• Review the importance of road safety and the key concepts covered in the lesson.
• Have students share their road safety posters or presentations with the class.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and consider their understanding of the concept covered in the lesson.
• Collect and review the road safety posters or presentations created during independent practice.
