2nd Grade Biographies Lesson Plan

Topic: Biographies

Objectives & Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to identify the structure of a biography.
  • Students will be able to use text evidence to provide an understanding of the biographic text structure.

Materials:

  • Biographic text
  • Graphic organizers (can be provided by the teacher or created by the students)

Warm-up

  • Have students play a game of "Biography Tag." In a circle, have one student start by saying the name of a famous person. The next student has to say a fact about that person, and so on.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of biographies and explain that they are books about the lives of famous or important people. -Introduce the graphic organizer and explain that it will help us organize and understand the structure of biographic text. -Have students work with a partner to complete the graphic organizer using text evidence from the biographic text.

Guided Practice

  • Have the class regroup and go through the completed graphic organizers as a class, discussing the overall structure of the biographic text and how the evidence supports that structure.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a different biographic text to complete on their own, using the graphic organizer to support their understanding of the text's structure.

Closure

  • Have students share their completed graphic organizers with the class and discuss their findings.
  • Review the key components of a biographic text and how to identify them using a graphic organizer.

Assessment

  • Use the completed graphic organizers as an assessment of student understanding of the key components of a biographic text and how to identify them using text evidence.
