Topic: Ordering food

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to use a/some/an correctly when ordering food at a restaurant.

Materials

• A variety of restaurant menus (or a blank one for students to create their own)
• Pencils
• Grammar worksheets with examples of a/some/an and corresponding foods (one per student)

Warm-up

• Draw a picture of a restaurant on the board and label the different parts of the menu (appetizers, main dishes, desserts). Ask students to raise their hands when they see a/some/an on the menu.
• Ask students if they have ever been to a restaurant before and if they have ever ordered food from the menu. Ask them to share their experience and any difficulties they may have had.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of ordering food at a restaurant and the use of a/some/an.
• Show students the picture of the menu and ask them to identify the different sections.
• Ask students to look at the menu and identify which words need to be replaced with a/some/an.
• Practice ordering food with a/some/an with a partner.
• Distribute the handouts with the menu and the a/some/an exercises and ask students to complete the exercises on their own.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a menu.
• Ask students to work together to order food using a/some/an.
• Have a volunteer from each group read their order out loud and check for accuracy.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a menu and have them order food on their own using a/some/an.
• Have students use pencil and paper to write out their order and check for accuracy.
• Encourage students to use the language they have learned during the activity to communicate with each other during the process.

Closure:

• Have students share their orders with the class and explain their choices using a/some/an.
• Review the concept of using a/some/an to order food and its meaning.
• Ask students to share any other examples they can think of using a/some/an to order food.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and look for correct use of a/some/an in their sentences.
• Have students turn in their completed sentences as a form of assessment.
