Place Value

is a fundamental concept in math that helps students understand the value of each digit in a number. In this lesson, kindergarten students will be introduced to place value through hands-on activities and games.

    Objectives:

      1. Students will be able to identify the value of each digit in a two-digit number.

        2. Students will be able to represent two-digit numbers using base-ten blocks.

          National Standards:

          • Common Core State Standards for Mathematics: K.NBT.1 - Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation.

          Materials:

          • Base-ten blocks
          • Number cards
          • Whiteboard and markers

          Warm-up:

Ask students: "How many tens are in the number 23?" Allow students to share their responses and discuss their answers as a class.

              Direct Instruction:

Start by introducing the concept of place value and explaining that each digit in a number represents a different value. Demonstrate how to count tens and ones using base-ten blocks. Show examples of two-digit numbers and have students identify the value of each digit.

                  Guided Practice:

                  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of base-ten blocks and number cards.
                  • Ask students to represent different two-digit numbers using the base-ten blocks and have them identify the value of each digit.
                  • Encourage students to work together to build and represent numbers.

                  Independent Practice:

For independent practice, students will work on a project-based activity where they will create their own two-digit numbers using base-ten blocks and write the value of each digit on a worksheet. They can also draw a representation of the numbers using pictures.

                      Closure:

To wrap up the lesson, have students participate in a closure activity where they share the numbers they created with the class and explain the value of each digit. This will reinforce the concept of place value.

                          Assessment:

The students' understanding of place value will be assessed through observation during the guided practice and independent practice activities. Additionally, you can assess students' understanding by giving them a brief quiz or asking them to explain the value of specific digits in a number.

                              Differentiation:

                              • For students with special needs, provide hands-on manipulatives and visual aids to support their understanding of place value.
                              • Offer additional practice opportunities for students who may need extra reinforcement.
                              • Provide simplified instructions and examples for students who may struggle with the concept.
