Topic: Introduction to Art Fundamentals

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and describe the elements of art: line, shape, color, texture, and form.

Materials

• Pencils
• Markers
• Construction paper
• Art images (optional)

Warm-up

• Ask students to look around the room and observe the various objects and images around them. Have them brainstorm a list of words that describe what they see.
• Review the list of words with the class and discuss their meanings.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of the five elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, and form).
• Use examples and demonstrations to explain each element and its role in art.
• For example, you can use different colored markers to create lines of different widths and lengths, and then have students identify and discuss the different lines.
• You can also use different materials to create different shapes and textures and have students discuss their different characteristics.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of art supplies (markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.).
• Have the students work together to create a piece of art using the five elements of art (line, shape, color, texture, and form).
• Provide assistance as needed to help students understand and use the five elements of art in their creations.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work independently to create their own piece of art using the five elements of art.
• Encourage them to experiment and explore the different ways that they can use the five elements of art in their art creations.
• Provide assistance as needed to help the students understand and use the five elements of art in their art creations.

Closure

• Have the students share their art creations with the class and explain the different ways that they used the five elements of art in their art creations.
