5th Grade Past Simple Tens Lesson Plan Example (English)

Topic: Past simple tens

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand and use the past simple tens to talk about quantities of 10 or more.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Examples of past simple tens (such as "10 cars," "10 bottles of water," or "10 people")

Warm-up

  • Ask students to stretch their hands and make a "thumbs-up" gesture, indicating that they are ready to learn.
  • Ask students to raise their hands if they can name quantities of 10 or more, such as "10 cars," "10 bottles of water," or "10 people."
  • Write these quantities on the whiteboard and ask students to think of others.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of tens to the students. Tell them that tens is a way of saying "10 times," and that it is used to describe quantities of 10 or more.
  • Explain that the past simple tense is used to talk about actions that happened in the past. It is formed by using the verb "to be" (was, were) + the past participle.
  • Write the verbs "to be" and "to go" on the whiteboard and ask students to give examples of actions that these verbs can be used to describe.
  • Introduce the past simple tense by using the verb "to go" as an example. Ask students to give the past simple form of "to go" by saying "went."
  • Have students repeat the past simple tense of "to go" several times, either by saying it out loud or by writing it on the whiteboard.

Guided Practice

  • With a partner, have students practice creating sentences in the past simple tense using the verb "to go."
  • Give each pair of students a set of sentence cards with actions written on them in the past simple tense. Have them work together to create a sentence for each card using the correct tense.
  • Have students work with a new partner to check their work and correct any mistakes.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a "past simple tense board game."
  • Students should cut out verb cards and noun cards and create a game board using poster board or a large piece of construction paper.
  • As they play, students should use the verb cards to create sentences in the past simple tense and use the noun cards to fill in the correct subject.

Closure

  • Review the past simple tense with students and have them give examples of sentences in the tense.
  • Ask students to share their past simple tense board games and explain how they used the verb and noun cards to create sentences.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice and give feedback on their use of the past simple tense.
  • Ask students to write a short paragraph using at least five past simple tense verbs. Review their paragraphs for accuracy and use of verb tenses.
