Topic: Making Nouns Plural

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify when a noun is singular and when it is plural.
  • Students will be able to add the suffix "s" to make a noun plural.

Materials

  • Nouns cards (e.g. cat, dog, tree, fruit, pencil)
  • Card stock or thin cardboard for each student
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Pencils

Warm-up

  • Have students form a small circle.
  • Hold up a card with a noun on it and ask if the students can name the noun.
  • If they can, have them stand up.
  • Do this with a few different nouns and have a few students stand up each time.
  • After a few rounds, ask if any of the students can sit down.
  • Continue this until all of the students are sitting down.
  • Ask if any of the students are still standing up.
  • Ask if any of the students are still standing up and if they can give a reason for why they are standing up.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that when a noun is the only one of its kind or the only one in a group, we need to make it plural by adding an s to the end.
  • Show the students a few examples of nouns and have them help you add an s to make them plural.
  • Ask the students to give you some examples of nouns that are not plural.
  • Ask the students to give you some reasons why some nouns are not plural.

Guided Practice

  • Give the students some examples of different types of nouns and have them identify whether the noun is singular or plural.
  • Have the students work in pairs to identify the singular and plural forms of the given nouns.
  • Review any incorrect answers with the class and explain why the nouns are singular or plural.

Independent Practice

  • Give the students a worksheet with nouns in singular and plural form and have them identify the correct form.
  • Encourage the students to use their pencils and talk to each other as they work.

Closure

  • Review with the students the concept of making nouns plural by adding -s or -es.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about making nouns plural today.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during their independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to make nouns plural correctly.
  • Collect the students' written work and assess their ability to correctly make nouns plural in a sentence.
