Topic: Descriptive writing based on an image

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to write a descriptive paragraph based on an image.

Materials

  • Image of a scene or object
  • Writing paper
  • Pencils

Warm-up

  • Ask students to describe an object or a place using as many sensory details as possible (sight, sound, smell, touch, taste). Encourage them to use adjectives and phrases.
  • As a class, write down the descriptions on the board.

Activity

  • Hand out the writing paper and pencils to students.
  • Show them the image and ask them to imagine that they are experiencing the scene or object described in the image.
  • Give them 5 minutes to write a descriptive paragraph based on the image.
  • After 5 minutes, have volunteers share their descriptions with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the characteristics of good descriptive writing (use of sensory details, use of adjectives and phrases, interesting language).
  • Explain that descriptive writing is useful in creating a vivid picture of a place or a person in the reader's mind.
  • Show examples of descriptive writing based on images.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to choose an image and write a short descriptive passage about it.
  • Have each group share their writing with the class and provide feedback and highlighting examples of good descriptive writing.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose their own images to write about and complete a writing project (e.g. a paragraph or short story) using descriptive writing techniques.

Closure

  • Have students share their writing projects with the class and provide feedback.

Assessm ent

  • Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback.
  • Collect and review students' writing projects.
