Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to give a proper greeting in English.

Materials

  • Pictures of different people from different countries and cultures (e.g. a Chinese person, a Japanese person, an American person, a French person, etc.)
  • A chart for each pair or small group of students to display the pictures
  • Pencils and paper for the students to take notes

Warm-up

  • Show the pictures of the different people to the students and ask them to guess what the people's countries of origin are.
  • After everyone has had a chance to guess, discuss the countries and the different ways that people from different countries might greet each other.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the book "Greetings from Around the World" by Ruthanne Lum McCunn.
  • Read the book to the class, pausing to discuss the different ways that people from different countries greet each other.
  • Ask the students to name some of the countries and greetings that they hear in the book.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a set of flashcards with pictures of people from different countries.
  • Have the students take turns showing a flashcard to the group and saying the name of the country.
  • Have the group members then respond with a greeting from that country.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
  • Ask the students to draw a picture of themselves and write a greeting in their language on the bottom of the page.
  • Have the students exchange papers with one another and practice saying and understanding greetings.

Closure

  • Have the students share their drawings and greetings with the class.
  • Ask the students to say one or two greetings in their own language.

Assessment

  • Observe and listen to the students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the concept of greetings and their ability to produce them in their own language.
  • Collect and review the students' drawings and written greetings to assess their understanding of the concept and their ability to express themselves in written and visual form.
