Topic:Hate

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the effects of hate on individuals and society as a whole.

Materials

  • Examples of hate-related events or incidents (e.g. news stories, personal anecdotes, etc.)
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to name some things that people can hate. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any reasons why people might hate certain things or people. Write their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that hate is a strong emotion that can lead to violence and discrimination against people who are different from us.
  • Share some examples of hate crimes from the news or from personal experience.
  • Emphasize that while it is natural to feel angry or frustrated at times, it is important to control our emotions and not to let them control us.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a copy of the Hate Crimes handout.
  • Have the students work together to identify and discuss examples of hate crimes from the list.
  • Encourage them to share their own experiences or opinions about hate crimes.
  • Bring the class back together and ask for volunteers to share what they learned from the discussion.

Independent Practice

  • Give students a blank timeline and have them use the Hate Crimes handout to fill in additional examples of hate crimes.
  • Encourage them to be creative and include both well-known and less common examples.
  • When they have finished, ask for volunteers to share their timelines with the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson, including the definition of a hate crime and the effects of hate on individuals and communities.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned or found particularly interesting about hate crimes.

  • Observe students during the group and independent projects to assess their understanding of the topic.
