  • Have the students work together to identify and discuss examples of hate crimes from the list.
  • Encourage them to share their own experiences or opinions about hate crimes.

Independent Practice

  • Give students a blank timeline and have them use the Hate Crimes handout to fill in additional examples of hate crimes.
  • Encourage them to be creative and include both well-known and less common examples.
  • When they have finished, ask for volunteers to share their timelines with the class.

  • Review the key points of the lesson, including the definition of a hate crime and the effects of hate on individuals and communities.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned or found particularly interesting about hate crimes.
