Topic: Types of paragraphs

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and classify different types of paragraphs, including explanatory, narrative, persuasive, and transactional.

Materials

  • Examples of paragraphs from various texts (e.g. textbooks, news articles, fiction stories)
  • Chart paper or whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about the different types of texts they encounter in their daily lives (e.g. textbooks, news articles, fiction stories, etc.).
  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of adjectives that describe the different types of texts they encounter.
  • Discuss the list of adjectives as a class and agree on a set of labels for the different types of texts (e.g. explanatory, narrative, persuasive, transactional).

  • Have students share their paragraphs with the class.
  • Have the class provide feedback and discuss the different text types and how they were effectively used in the paragraphs.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided practice and independent practice to ensure they are effectively using the different text types in their paragraphs.
  • Collect and assess their paragraphs for accuracy and proper use of the different text types.
