Topic: What is AI and how can it be used

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define AI and understand the different types of AI and their functions.

Materials

• Handouts with definitions and examples of different types of AI (e.g. natural language processing, machine learning, artificial neural networks)
• Computers or tablets for the students to experiment with AI techniques

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have heard of AI before and if they know what it is. Write their responses on the board.
• Have the students brainstorm a list of tasks that humans typically do easily but that computers have difficulty with, such as driving a car, recognizing emotions, and playing games like chess and go.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that artificial intelligence (AI) is the field of research that aims to create computers that are capable of human-like intelligence.
• Discuss the different approaches to AI, such as rule-based systems, expert systems, and neural networks.
• Introduce the concept of machine learning and explain how it is being used to improve AI, including in areas such as speech recognition and natural language processing.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a mini-project on a specific AI technique, such as rule-based systems or expert systems. Give each pair a specific AI-related topic and provide them with materials such as handouts, articles, and online videos.
• Have students present their mini-projects to the class and lead a class discussion on the topic.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based assignment where they apply one or more AI techniques to a real-world problem. For example, they could use AI to predict sports results, create an AI system to play computer games, or design an automat-ed guidance system for a self-driving car.
• Provide students with materials such as handouts, articles, and online videos to support their projects.
