Topic: Reading a short story

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define basic vocabulary found in a short story.

Materials

  • Short story
  • Vocabulary list
  • Drawing materials (optional)

Warm-up

  • Show students a picture drawn by a children's author and ask them to describe what they see. As they describe the picture, encourage them to use descriptive words.
  • Go over the vocabulary they used and discuss the meaning of each word.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the short story that the class will be reading and explain the target vocabulary that will be focused on during the reading.
  • Have students take out their copies of the short story and read the first few pages together as a class, stopping to discuss and define any vocabulary words that come up.
  • As the class continues to read the short story, encourage them to use the target vocabulary and not to hesitate to ask for help if they are unsure of the meaning of a word.

Guided Practice

  • After finishing the short story, have students work in small groups to summarize the plot and focus on the use of the target vocabulary.
  • As a class, discuss the overall effectiveness of the target vocabulary and how it impacted the understanding of the story.
  • Provide examples and additional practice with the target vocabulary by having students create flashcards and quiz each other.
  • During the quiz, have students work in small groups and ask each group a set of questions using the target vocabulary.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a short story from a list or a short story they have previously read and complete the activity sheet provided.
  • Have students use the target vocabulary to fill in the blanks in the sentence pairs and use context to decipher the meaning of any unfamiliar words.
  • As a class, go over the activity sheets and discuss the overall effectiveness of the target vocabulary and how it impacted the understanding of the story.

Closure

  • Review the target vocabulary that was introduced and practiced throughout the lesson.
  • Ask students to share one thing they learned or found interesting about the target vocabulary.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding of the target vocabulary.
  • Collect and review their written responses to assess their understanding of the target vocabulary and their ability to effectively use the target vocabulary in a written piece.
