Human Digestive System Lesson Plan for 9th Grade Students

Topic: Human Digestive System

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and name the parts of the digestive system and describe their functions.

Materials

• Augmented reality device such as a smartphone or tablet
• Augmented reality app such as Walking Atlas or Wikitude
• Pointers or markers
• Handout with illustrations and descriptions of the parts of the digestive system

Warm-up

• Ask students to raise their hand if they have ever heard of the digestive system.
• Ask a few students to share what they know about the digestive system.
• Refer to the handout and point to the illustrations of the parts of the digestive system and ask students to name them.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of the human digestive system and its functions.
• Use the augmented reality app to demonstrate the structure and functions of the digestive system.
• Use the virtual reality goggles to allow students to experience what it's like to be inside the digestive system.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a set of illustrated flashcards with the parts of the digestive system labeled.
• Have the students use the augmented reality app to locate and identify the parts of the digestive system on the virtual human.
• Have the students share their findings with the class and discuss the functions of each part.

Independent Practice

• Have the students create a figurative -map of the digestive system using construction paper and scissors.
• Students should use the information they learned during the lesson to label and color in the parts of the digestive system on their map.
• Encourage the students to be creative and add their own personal touch to their maps.

Closure

• Review the different parts of the digestive system and their functions.
• Ask the students to share their figurative -maps with the class and explain their designs.
• Ask the students to think about how their understanding of the digestive system has changed since the beginning of the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the guided -independent practice to assess their understanding of the different parts of the digestive system and their functions.
• Review the students' figurative -maps and their explanations to assess their understanding of the process of digestion.
