Sentence Construction Lesson Plan for Kindergarten Students

Topic: Sentence construction

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to form simple sentences by combining a subject and a verb.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sentence construction worksheets (one for each student)

Warm-up

  • Review the difference between nouns and verbs. Ask students to provide examples of each.
  • Ask students to provide examples of common sentence structures, such as "John threw the ball," or "the cat meowed."

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of sentence structure, and explain that it refers to how words are arranged to form a sentence.
  • Using the sentence cards, demonstrate how to combine nouns, verbs, and common sentence structures to form a complete sentence.
  • For example, to form the sentence "I like cats," combine the noun "I" with the verb "like" and the noun "cats" using a comma and the word "and."
  • As students practice forming sentences, provide guidance and feedback as needed.

Guided Practice

  • Give each student a set of sentence construction cards and have them work in pairs to combine the cards to form complete sentences.
  • Give students time to practice this skill, and provide assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic they are interested in and find several pictures related to that topic.
  • Have them use the pictures to create a class book about their topic, and include at least 5 complete sentences.
  • Have students create their class book and present it to the class.

Closure

  • Review the importance of using complete sentences in our communication.
  • Have students share one thing they learned about sentence construction during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to check their understanding of using complete sentences.
  • Evaluate students' written work to see if they use complete sentences to express their thoughts.
