Rudimentary Language Arts Learning for Young Children

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and name basic body parts.
  • Students will be able to identify and name basic colors.

Materials

  • Picture cards with images of body parts and colors
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Review the names of some basic body parts (e.g. eyes, nose, mouth).
  • Review the names of some basic colors (e.g. red, blue, yellow).

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the word "hello" and practice saying it together.
  • Introduce the word "goodbye" and practice saying it together.
  • Explain that we are going to learn some basic greetings in English.
  • Read the greetings from the cards and have the children repeat them after you.
  • Encourage the children to practice the greetings with each other.

Guided Practice

  • Have the children work in pairs and take turns saying the greetings to each other.
  • Have the children practice saying the greetings to a teacher or parent.

Independent Practice

  • Have the children create a class book that includes all of the greetings that they have learned.
  • Have the children illustrate the book and write the greetings in their own words.
  • Have the children share their class book with the rest of the class.

Closure

  • Review the different greetings that the children have learned.
  • Have the children share one new greeting with the class.

Assessment:

  • Observe the children during independent practice to ensure they are using the greetings they have learned in their own writing.
  • Collect and review the children's books to assess their understanding of the different greetings and their ability to use them in their own writing.
