Reading And Decoding Lesson Plan for Kindergarten Students

Topic: Decoding and Reading

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to decode simple words and phrases.

Materials

• Word cards with various words and phrases
• A whiteboard and markers
• A copy of a simple text for reading

Warm-up

• Review the alphabet and sounds that each letter makes.
• Ask the students to clap or tap when they hear a sound in a word.
• Have the students pair up and practice reading simple words and phrases to each other.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of decoding, or identifying the individual sounds in a word.
• Using the whiteboard, demonstrate how to identify the sounds in a word and how they correspond to the letters in the word.
• Have the students practice decoding words using the whiteboard as a guide.
• Gradually increase the difficulty by introducing words with more sounds and longer words.

Guided Practice

• Provide the students with a word list and have them work in pairs to decode the words and write them on their own paper.
• Walk around the classroom and offer assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose a book to read independently and use the word list to decode any words they do not know.
• Have the students create a reading log to record the name of the book they read and the words they had to decode.

Closure

• Have the students share one word they had to decode and how they did it.
• Review the steps for decoding words: look at the first letter, sound it out, and then read the rest of the word.

Assessment

• Observe the students during independent practice to assess their ability to decode words.
• Have the students take a quiz where they must decode a list of words and select the correct word from a group of options.
