Topic: Community helpers

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different roles and responsibilities of community helpers, including: firefighters, police officers, doctors, nurses, and teachers.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the unique duties and responsibilities of each community helper.

Materials

  • Pictures or cutouts of different community helpers (e.g. firefighter, policeman, doctor, nurse, teacher)
  • Copies of the "What Are the Roles of Community Helpers?" worksheet

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what different community helpers do. Write their responses on the board.
  • Ask students to name a community helper they know and what they do. Write their responses on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the picture cards of different community helpers and discuss what each one does.
  • Ask students to share any personal experiences they have had with community helpers.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of the picture cards.
  • Have the groups work together to create a list of the different types of community helpers and how each one helps the community.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work individually to create a poster or collage (or any other project of their choice) that shows what community helpers do and how they help the community.
  • Encourage the students to use the picture cards as a reference, and to include any additional information they learned during the lesson.

Closure

  • Ask the students to share their posters or collages with the class.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about community helpers during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of the different roles of community helpers.
  • Collect and review the posters or collages to assess the students' ability to research and present information about a community helper.
  • Administer a quiz to the students to assess their understanding of the basic information about three community helpers.
