Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify various fruits and vegetables.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the proper way to plant and take care of a fruit or vegetable garden.

Materials

  • Soil
  • Fruits and vegetables (such as carrots, tomatoes, apples, and cucumbers)
  • Plant seeds
  • Gardening tools (such as a trowel, containers, and a watering can)

Warm-Up

  • Review the alphabet and ask the students to name a fruit or vegetable that starts with each letter.
  • Have the students recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Ask the students if they have ever seen a fruit or vegetable garden before and if they know how to plant seeds and take care of the plants.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students different types of fruits and vegetables and have them identify them.
  • Discuss the proper way to plant seeds and how to take care of the plants (watering, weeding, etc.).
  • Demonstrate how to use a gardening tool such as a shovel or hoe.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to plant and care for a seedling of their choice.
  • Have the teacher or an assistant circulate to provide assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to choose and plant a variety of different seeds.
  • Have the students water and care for their seeds until they have grown into seedlings.
  • Have the students present their seedlings to the class and explain how they have taken care of them.

Closure

  • Review the importance of planting seeds and taking care of seedlings in order to grow healthy plants.
  • Ask the students to share their favorite part of the lesson and explain why.
  • Have the students give a shout out to all the different fruits and vegetables that they have learned about today.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they plant their seeds and watch to make sure they are following the proper technique.
  • Have the students take a quiz on the different fruits and vegetables to see if they can identify them and their characteristics.
  • Have the students draw a picture of a fruit or vegetable and write a short sentence about it to show their understanding.
