Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• graph paper
• pencils
• addition worksheets with numbers from 1-10

Warm-up

• Review the concept of writing numbers using digits (e.g. 4=4+0+0+0)
• Ask the students to write down a number and have them explain how they know that it is that number.
• Introduce the concept of place value and have the students explain how they know that a number is a certain value.

Direct Instruction

• Draw a number line on the board and have the students label the numbers 0-100.
• Show the students two different numbers and have them tell you if they are the same or different.
• Have the students add the two numbers using manipulatives or mental math.
• Have the students write the addition equation using digits.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of manipulatives or objects to represent numbers.
• Have the students use the manipulatives to add the two numbers together and then write the equation using digits.
• Go around the room and help the students if they are having trouble.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in groups of three and give each group a set of manipulatives or objects to represent numbers.
