Topic: Vocal workshop

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the different parts of the vocal tract and how they contribute to the production of different sounds.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proper breathing technique and vocal control.

Materials

  • Chart with diagrams of the vocal tract
  • Voice recordings of different sounds
  • Popsicle sticks or pencils
  • String or yarn

Warm-up

  • Have the students sit in a circle.
  • Show the students a picture of the vocal tract and explain that it is the structure in our body that we use to make sounds with our voices.
  • Ask the students to think of a animal that makes a sound that they recognize, and have them raise their hand if they can name the animal.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any other sounds that animals make, and have them raise their hand if they can name the animal.
  • Continue this with a list of different sounds that the students can think of and have them raise their hand if they can name the object that makes that sound.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the students the pictures of the vocal tract again and go over the different parts, explaining what each part is and how it is used to make different sounds.
  • Have the students practice making different sounds using the vocal tract and encouraging them to use the appropriate parts of the vocal tract to make each sound.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of sound cards or objects that make different sounds.
  • Have the students take turns taking the sound card or object from their partner and using the vocal tract to make the sound.
  • Encourage the students to use the appropriate parts of the vocal tract to make the sound and ask them to describe what they are doing to make the sound.
  • Have the students practice making the different sounds with their partner and give feedback on how well they are using the vocal tract to make the sounds.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups and choose a song that they are familiar with.
  • Have them listen to the song and identify the different sounds that are used.
  • Have the students create a poster or something else that shows how the sounds are used in the song and how they are made using the vocal tract.
  • Have the students present their posters to the class.

Closure

  • Have the students share one thing that they learned about vocal sounds during the lesson.
  • Encourage the students to use their voices outside of class and have fun singing!
