Topic: Postcard Exchange

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to write a postcard to a student in a different country.

Materials

  • Postcards
  • Pencils
  • Writing paper

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever written a letter to someone who lives far away.
  • Have them share their experiences and discuss the differences between writing a letter and writing a postcard.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that today the students are going to be writing postcards to students in a different country.
  • Show the students examples of different countries and ask them to guess which country each postcard is from.
  • Discuss the different ways that people in different countries live and what they might have in common.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to start and help them brainstorm ideas for what to write in their postcards.
  • Provide support as needed as the students begin to write their postcards.

Independent Practice

  • Encourage the students to finish writing their postcards and to consider including a picture as well.
  • Have the students exchange their postcards with a partner and read each other's postcards.
  • Encourage the students to discuss the similarities and differences between what they each wrote in their postcards.

Closure

  • Have the students share what they learned about another country through writing their postcards.
  • Ask the students to reflect on what they learned about writing postcards and how they can use this skill in the future.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they work on their postcards and provide feedback on their writing skills and understanding of the country they are writing about.
  • Collect the completed postcards and use them to assess the students' understanding of the concept of writing postcards and their ability to communicate with a student in a different country.
