Objective & Outcomes

  • Children will be able to identify different materials and understand that they can be recycled.

Materials

  • A variety of recyclable materials such as cardboard, bottles, paper, plastic, etc.
  • Container or box to put the recyclable materials in

Warm-up

  • Have the children take out any recyclable materials they have at home and place them in a container or box.
  • Ask the children what materials they have and if they know how they can be recycled.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the children pictures or real examples of different types of recyclable materials and explain how they can be recycled.
  • Discuss the importance of recycling and how it helps to protect the environment.

Guided Practice

  • Have the children work in pairs and give each pair a tray or small basket.
  • Show the children how to sort the recyclable materials into the different categories (plastic, glass, paper).
  • Have the children sort the materials into the correct categories and place them in the tray or basket.

Independent Practice

  • Have the children work in pairs again and give each pair a small amount of recyclable materials (e.g. plastic bottles, glass jars, newspapers).
  • Ask the children to identify the different materials and think of ways they can be recycled.
  • Have the children come up with a list of ways they can recycle the materials and share their ideas with the class.

Closure

  • Review the importance of recycling and the different ways we can recycle.
  • Ask the children to share one thing they learned about recycling today.

Assessment

  • Observe the children during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their understanding of the different ways of recycling.
