Topic: How to handle emotions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify their emotions and understand what triggers them.
  • Students will be able to control their emotions and react appropriately.

Materials:

  • Diapering supplies for a role-play (optional)
  • Hand puppets
  • Pictures of different emotions

Warm-up

  • Show the students a picture of a happy person and ask them to describe what the person is doing and how they are behaving.
  • Then show them a picture of a sad person and do the same.
  • Ask the students if they have ever felt happy or sad and ask them to share their experiences.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of emotions and explain that they are feelings that we have inside of us.
  • Emphasize that it is normal to feel emotions, but it is important to know how to handle them properly.
  • Explain the three steps for handling emotions: 1) recognize the emotion you are feeling, 2) understand why you are feeling that emotion, and 3) choose a healthy way to react to it.
  • Use the pictures as examples to demonstrate the steps.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the group into pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a set of pictures and have them work together to identify the emotions they see and explain why they think the person is feeling that emotion.
  • Have the groups share their answers with the class and discuss any differences or similarities.
  • Reinforce the three steps for handling emotions and how they can be used in real-life situations.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based independent practice, such as creating a board game or short skit that teaches others how to handle emotions.
  • Encourage students to be creative and use their own experiences to come up with ideas.

Closure

  • Review the importance of understanding and handling emotions in order to make good decisions.
  • Have students share their projects with the class, and discuss any lessons they learned about emotions.

Assessment
