Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will learn how to research and discuss sociopolitical issues.
  • Students will be able to create solutions for a given social problem.

Materials

  • Internet access for research
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Social problems or issues (e.g. poverty, environmental issues, etc.)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share some of the things they do to help others. Write their answers on the whiteboard.
  • Ask students if they have heard of social problems or issues. Give examples such as poverty, environmental issues, etc.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that a social problem is a problem that affects a group of people in society.
  • Show students examples of social problems, and have them discuss and brainstorm ideas about how to solve them.
  • Use the Internet or other resources to find examples of social problems and have students discuss and brainstorm ideas about how to solve them.
  • Lead a discussion about the different social problems and how they can be solved. Encourage students to share their ideas and opinions.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and provide each group with a social problem to research.
  • Have students use the Internet or other resources to find information about the social problem they are researching.
  • Have students discuss and brainstorm ideas about how to solve the social problem they are researching.
  • Bring the groups back together and have them share their ideas with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one social problem that they are concerned about or that they think could be solved.
  • Have students create a poster or presentation about their chosen social problem and the solutions they came up with during the group activity.
  • Have students present their posters or presentations to the class.

Closure

  • Have students reflect on the process of researching and discussing social problems and the solutions they came up with during the activity.
  • Have students share what they learned about social problems and solutions with the class.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and discuss their understanding of the social problem and their solution with the teacher.
  • Collect and evaluate the solutions created by the students during the independent practice activity.
