Kindergarten Acting Lesson Plan Example (Theatre)

Topic: Acting

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the different parts of a character and how they affect the overall characteristics of the character.

Materials

  • Pictures of different characters from books, movies, or television shows (e.g. a witch, a princess, a superhero, a robot, etc.)
  • A whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking the students to think about their favorite characters from books, movies, or television shows.
  • Ask the students to share their favorite characters with the class and discuss what makes them interesting or fun.
  • As the students share their ideas, write their responses on the whiteboard.
  • After a few students have shared their ideas, ask the class to look at the whiteboard and see if they can make any connections between the different ideas.
  • Encourage the students to think about the different parts of a character (e.g. appearance, personality, actions, etc.) and how they might affect the overall characteristics of the character.

Direct Instruction

  • After the warm-up, introduce the concept of acting and explain that actors are someone who plays a character in a movie, play, or television show.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any actors they know and have them share their names with the class.
  • Discuss the different characteristics of the actors that were mentioned and how they might have been used to help create the character they are playing.
  • As an example, show a picture of a character from a movie or TV show and have the students guess who it is and what their characteristics are.

Guided Practice

  • Provide the students with a set of character cards and have them act out the characters while discussing their characteristics.
  • As a class, discuss the different characters and characteristics that the students acted out.

Independent Practice

  • Provide the students with a scenario and have them write and act out a short scene with a character from the scenario. As a class, discuss the different characters and their characteristics that the students acted out.

Closure

  • Review the steps for acting and ask the students to share one thing they learned about acting today.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice and give feedback on their ability to get into a character and act out a short scene.
