Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Pictures of family members (e.g. parent, child, brother, sister)
  • Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have any brothers or sisters.
  • Ask students to name their siblings.
  • Ask students if they have any parents.
  • Ask students to name their parents.
  • Ask students if they have any grandparents.
  • Ask students to name their grandparents.

Direct Instruction

  • Show the pictures of family members and ask students to name them.
  • Remind students to listen for the names and repeat them.

Guided Practice

  • Show the pictures of family members again and ask students to point to the ones they know.
  • Have students take turns showing and naming the family members they know.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
  • Have students draw a picture of their family and write names under the pictures of their family members.
  • Encourage students to share their pictures with the class and have the class name the family members.

Closure

  • Review the names of family members that were learned in the lesson.
  • Ask students to share something they learned about family members today.
  • Remind students that they can ask questions about family members anytime.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the sorting activity and discussion to assess their understanding of the different family members.
  • Evaluate students' artwork for the correct use of family member names and the correct spelling of each name.
