Topic: Social Media: Bane or Boon

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to evaluate the positive and negative impacts of social media on society.

Materials

• Access to various social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram)
• Any additional materials or resources needed to support the lesson (e.g. articles, presentations)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share their personal experiences with and perceptions of social media. What do they like about it? What don't they like?
• Allow for a shared discussion about the pros and cons of social media.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of social media and its impact on society.
• Distribute the handouts and provide brief overview of different types of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
• Discuss the pros of social media, such as its ability to connect people and enable communication and sharing of information and ideas.
• Discuss the cons of social media, such as its potential for cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and addiction.
• Ask students to brainstorm other potential benefits and concerns related to social media.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a specific social media platform (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram).
• Have each group create a poster highlighting the benefits and concerns related to the given platform.
• Have each group present their posters to the class and facilitate a discussion on the benefits and concerns identified.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one social media platform to create a project on.
• The project should be based on a specific topic (e.g. social media and cyber-bullying, social media and self-esteem, etc.) and should include research on the benefits and concerns related to the chosen platform.
• Have students present their projects to the class.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson.
• Encourage students to think critically about the role of social media in their lives and how they can use it responsibly.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the group discussions and presentations to assess their understanding of the topic.
• Evaluate the students' social media profiles to assess their level of-responsibility and appropriate use of social media.
