Topic: Teaching the Alphabet

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds.

Materials

• Alphabet cards (one for each student)
• Objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet (e.g. apple for "A," ball for "B," etc.)
• Pen and paper for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what the alphabet is.
• Ask students if they can name the letters of the alphabet.
• Have students practice saying the sounds of each letter of the alphabet.

Direct Instruction

• Review the names of the letters of the alphabet with students.
• Have students practice saying the names of the letters of the alphabet.
• Go over the sounds that each letter makes.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs and take turns saying the name of a letter and saying the sound that it makes.
• Encourage students to help their partner by saying the sound correctly.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a poster or alphabet cards that includes all of the letters in the alphabet.
• Students can include a picture to go along with each letter and a word that starts with that letter.

Closure

• Review the letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they represent.
• Have students share any words that they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to write words

that begin with a chosen letter of the alphabet.

• Have students take a quiz in which they must identify the beginning sound of a word

and choose the correct letter of the alphabet.
