Heart

Topic: Heart

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe the function of the heart and its major organs.

Materials

  • Diagram of the heart
  • Diagram of the major organs of the body
  • Pictures of the major organs (e.g. liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.)
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Paper
  • Pencils

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they know what the heart is and what it does. Allow a few students to answer and discuss their responses.
  • Show students the diagram of the heart and explain that the heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout the body.

Direct Instruction

  • Discuss the structure of the heart, including the four chambers (right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, and left ventricle) and the valves that control blood flow between them.
  • Show students the model of the heart and use scissors to cut out the chambers and valves. Have students glue the pieces onto a piece of construction paper to create a visual representation of the heart.
  • Review the functions of the heart, including pumping blood throughout the body and oxygenating the blood.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of heart-themed crafts and activities (e.g. pipe cleaners for blood vessel models, red and blue tissue paper for colored blood, glue, construction paper).
  • Have students work together to complete the crafts and activities, guiding them as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a piece of construction paper and a bottle of red paint.
  • Have students use the paint to draw a picture of their heart. Encourage them to be creative and include as many details as possible.

Closure

  • Ask students to share their drawings with the class and explain why they chose to include certain details.
  • Ask students to write a list of the parts of the heart and explain their drawings.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to see if they are accurately identifying the parts of the heart and explaining their drawings.
  • Collect the drawings and written explanations and use them to assess students' understanding of the parts of the heart.
